The benefits of dash cam driving

  • The benefits of dash cam driving

In a world where we can pretty much capture anything anytime, it’s no surprise that in-car cameras have become increasingly popular amongst drivers. It’s estimated that a quarter of Britain’s motorists now have a dash cam fitted in their vehicle!

Having a visual record of your journeys is invaluable in the event of an accident, or if you witness an incident on the road; it can even mean you save some money!

What are the benefits of having a dash cam?

Hard evidence

If you’re unfortunate enough to be involved in a collision whilst you’re out and about, dash cams can provide proof of the events that unfolded and, most importantly, who was at fault. This makes all the difference when it comes to liability for costs.

It’s not just accidents that dash cams come in handy for - they can be used to evidence bad driving and road rage incidents too.

Security

Dash cams with a parking mode can capture video even when the vehicle is parked through clever motion sensors. That means if your vehicle gets vandalised or a break-in is attempted, it’s all caught on camera. Even just the presence of a dash cam in your windscreen could deter thieves!

Money off your insurance

Having recognised their merits in proof and prevention when it comes to accidents, some insurance companies are now offering discounted premiums if you drive with one of these handy devices fitted.

Are dash cams easy to install?

Typically, dash cams are mounted onto your windscreen using suction; though some use adhesive. Using your 12V power outlet or a USB connection is your best bet for basic dash cam function, operating using power from your car’s battery.

Hardwiring is an option, especially if you’re keen for footage to be captured when your vehicle isn’t in use. If you go down the hardwired route, we’d recommend getting professionals involved in the installation.

Once you’re all set up, your camera will start recording once you turn the ignition on, and stop when it’s turned off. Easy!

One thing to bear in mind if you’re heading into dash cam ownership is keeping on the right side of the rules; fitting it inappropriately to your windscreen can obstruct your view of the road, which could even land you with a fine.

Dash cams are a great investment for your peace of mind, and recording your journeys can really pay off when it comes to settling claims and disputes quickly. Make sure you choose the right one for you, fit it properly, and look forward to having footage on hand to prove the unexpected.
